JEREMY CORBYN called on Theresa May today to stop playing political games with Brexit, branding her “incapable” after she was roundly humiliated by European Union leaders at a summit in Austria.
And he demanded that No 10 and Brussels both desist from playing “political games” that put citizens’ interests at risk.
He was speaking after the Prime Minister made a statement outside 10 Downing Street in which she pleaded with EU leaders to treat Britain with respect.
Claiming that they had given no detailed reasons for their rejection of her plan at the Salzburg summit, she said that inaction at this “late stage of negotiations” was “not acceptable.”
Her statement came after the government’s Chequers plan, which sought to create economic “harmonisation” between the EU and Britain, was rejected outright by the bloc’s representatives.
Ms May rejected calls to hold a second referendum on EU membership, but said the two options on offer – leaving the single market but remaining in the European Economic Area (EEA), or a basic free trade agreement – would both be damaging for Britain.
“Throughout this process, I have treated the EU with nothing but respect,” she said.
“The UK expects the same.
“We now need to hear from the EU what the real issues are and what their alternative is so we can discuss them. Until we do, we cannot make progress.”
Mr Corbyn commented: “Theresa May’s Brexit negotiating strategy has been a disaster.
“The Tories have spent more time arguing among themselves than negotiating with the EU.
“From day one, the Prime Minister has looked incapable of delivering a good Brexit deal for Britain.
“The political games from both the EU and our government need to end, because no deal is not an option.” (Source: Morning Star Online)
